(AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a central Florida beauty salon Thursday, killing three women and wounding the manager, who had asked for a restraining order against him, police said. After the rampage, the gunman went to a friend's house and killed himself.

Authorities said the shooting was part of a domestic dispute, but did not elaborate. The gunman, identified by police as Bradford Baumet, was served with a domestic violence injunction Oct. 9 and scheduled to be in court Thursday for a hearing with the salon's manager, Marcia Santiago. Their relationship was not immediately clear.

About two hours before the hearing, Baumet, 36, entered Las Dominicanas M & M Salon in Casselberry and started shooting, police spokeswoman Sara Brady said. Two women hid inside a bathroom and one ran outside through a back door.

Santiago, 44, was in serious condition at a hospital. She was shot five times, according to her ex-husband, William Ayala, who spoke to her sister. Ayala said he had a daughter with Santiago and the girl lived with him.

"I heard he was violent and had a criminal record," he told The Associated Press.

Records in Florida and Rhode Island show Baumet has been previously arrested for domestic assault, felony assault, stalking, burglary and drug possession.

Police identified two other victims as 52-year-old Gladys Cabrera, a customer and 29-year-old Noelia Gonzalez-Brito, a salon employee. Authorities did not immediately identify the fourth woman who died.

Shortly after the shooting, about two dozen mourners gathered near the salon, located in a strip mall. Police taped off the parking lot and officers stood guard outside the business. Yellow paper covered up some of the glass windows. A Dominican Republic flag hung in the storefront along with a neon sign that read: Hair Cut. Color. Perm.

Calls to the salon's owner also went unanswered. A video posted on the salon's website shows a woman explaining in Spanish the services offered at the salon for men and women.

Casselberry is about 15 miles northeast of Orlando.

A witness to the salon shooting told the Orlando Sentinel (http://thesent.nl/WsxRBn) he heard gunshots before seeing the gunman flee.

"We saw the guy with the gun in his hand ... coming this way ... on foot with the gun in his hand," said Juan Diaz, who was at a nearby store at the time of the shooting. He said he went into the salon once the gunman left and saw "a bunch of dead bodies."

When Baumet went to his friends' house, he did not threaten them, but said "he had some problems, problems he could not remedy," Seminole County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Heather Smith said.

Baumet was jailed in Orange County on Oct. 14 after an arrest for driving on a suspended license. He was released the following day after posting $250 bond and sentenced to time-served.

A phone number listed for Baumet was disconnected.

A year ago in Orange County in Southern California, an angry ex-husband donned a bulletproof vest before killing his ex-wife and six of her fellow stylists and patrons at a hair salon, police said. Scott Dekraai is also accused of killing a man in the parking lot. He is awaiting trial on murder charges.

Why Your Next Car Should—And Shouldn't—Be a Wi-Fi Hotspot

Which of the following features offered in the $48,800 2013 Audi Allroad Prestige model seems like more trouble than it's worth? Power leather seats, panoramic sunroof, adaptive xenon headlamps, 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio, voice?controlled navigation system, rearview camera, radar-based blind-spot detection, or a six-month subscription to the Audi Connect T-Mobile in-car Internet system with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot?which costs $30 a month after that.

In-car Internet access and built-in Wi-Fi aren't entirely new. Since 2008, Chrysler's Mopar parts division has offered a dealer?installed Wi-Fi modem from Autonet Mobile that can tap into 3G networks and create an in-car hotspot. But Internet modems and Wi-Fi hotspots are evolving from bolt-on accessories to factory?integrated options?Audi offers Connect on both the Allroad and the A7, and Dodge offers a similar system on the new 2013 Ram pickup. Mark Dahncke, a spokesman for Audi of America, sees his company's system as both a technological differentiator and a natural step toward the connected car of the future, one that will be "able to benefit from even further efficiency, safety, and infotainment offerings."

Internet access in cars is a tricky proposition. Some of the functionality that it enables has undeniable appeal (real-time traffic data, enhanced maps, streaming music). The car-as-Wi-Fi-hotspot idea is more dubious. Is this just the next logical step in rear-seat entertainment or an invitation to even more driver distraction? Even if you put aside the potential safety concerns, the question arises: Is this even necessary? After the free trial period expires, the $30-a-month bill seems awfully redundant given the fee you're likely already paying for a data plan on your smartphone. And the service seems pretty redundant too. Basic Android and Apple iOS devices can already access the same 3G networks that are offered by T-Mobile or, in Chrysler's case, Sprint?in fact, they can also access the much faster 4G networks of Verizon Wireless and AT&T. And most modern smartphones can spawn a Wi-Fi hotspot without the need for any extra equipment in the car.

Many automakers seem content to hand off any Internet connection to a driver's phone. Ford's Sync system connects with Android, BlackBerry, and Apple iOS devices to run apps and can turn the phone's data connection into a Wi-Fi hotspot. BMW's ConnectedDrive system does the same thing with a user's own LTE SIM card. Praveen Chandrasekar, telematics and infotainment analyst for Frost & Sullivan, thinks Audi and Dodge are catering to premium and business customers who might be willing to pay an extra monthly charge for the convenience of built-in connectivity. "These systems are trying to target the upper market," he says. "The carmakers know very well that this kind of solution will not appeal to everybody."

For those customers who do see some utility in a rolling Wi-Fi network and don't mind paying $30 a month for the use of it, built-in systems may still prove problematic in the long term, since automotive and tech life cycles are notoriously out of sync. Each year brings faster connections and new capabilities that can swiftly outmode in-car equipment. Just ask owners of OnStar-equipped vehicles built before 2004?those cars and trucks accessed an analog cellular network that was shut down in January 2008. It's not at all inconceivable that today's 3G networks, or the current Wi-Fi protocol, will be outmoded or even out of service a few years from now?making the technology in the current Allroad a mobile anachronism.

WHY-FI?


In-car Wi-Fi may one day save your life. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently conducting a yearlong field trial in Ann Arbor, Mich., to determine whether an offshoot of the 802.11 protocol known as Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) could serve as the glue that connects cars to help reduce accidents.

Unlike traditional Wi-Fi, DSRC isn't useful for throwing Internet connections around; instead, it serves as a datalink that lets one vehicle automatically warn another when congestion is ahead or if a collision is imminent at a blind intersection. DSRC has a longer range than the traditional Wi-Fi (about 1000 feet, compared with 300 for Wi-Fi). If the tests prove successful, DSRC may one day be mandated by the federal government.

This raises inevitable questions about who would pay for the technology. "The reality is that adoption of DSRC technology is at least 10 years away and will require investments that federal and local governments may be unwilling to make, while the resistance of carmakers will also be strong," Roger Lanctot, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, says.

When to Know Your Child is Ready for Their First Pet

Having pets in the household can teach kids valuable lessons in responsibility and help them develop understanding and caring for animals. A child?s age should play a part regarding which pet you choose, however. Many young children, under the age of 5 or 6, have difficulty comprehending that animals are more than interesting toys. Keeping this in mind, choose pets with great care for this age group. Here are tips on choosing a first pet for children.

Fish promote calm and are appropriate pets for all ages, as long as you teach your child not to handle the fish or the aquarium. If you have a toddler or young child running around, keep the aquarium out of reach. At ages 7 and older, you can allow the child to take part in feeding the fish. Teach them the dangers of over-feeding. Most fish have a short lifespan in an aquarium. Be prepared to comfort your child if he or she grieves a fish, and take time to discuss questions that may arise about death.

If you have a child 5 and over, consider a gerbil, bunny or Guinea pig. These make good starter pets because they are docile. Hamsters bite, so if you were considering a hamster, wait until the child is 9 or 10. You will need to assist with feeding and supervise handling so your child learns how to handle the gerbil or other animal without hurting them.

When your child is around 9 years old, it is normally all right to introduce a cat or dog to your house. Your child?s maturity level, calmness and compassion, determines the exact age he or she should be allowed this type of pet. At this age, the child should be responsible for taking care of the pet?s food and water bowls as well as spending playtime with the pet. Reptiles, such as lizards, small snakes, and geckos are also appropriate for this age group. Some of these pets might require extra accessories such as incubators. Also note that reptiles require special care and some carry salmonella. Teach your child to wash his or her hands well with soap and water after handling pets.

Another pet that is suitable for children of most age groups is the sea monkey. Sea monkeys are brine shrimp. You can purchase their eggs in kits, place them and a special solution in an aquarium and watch them grow. Some sea monkey kits come with an aquarium, so you do not have to purchase it separately.

Home winemaking: A particularly Berkeley pastime | Berkeleyside

Tim Patterson held up the wine glass filled with a ruby red liquid, twirled it, and then tipped it back to his lips. ?Mmmm,? he said with obvious pleasure. ?Not bad.?

The red liquid in the glass looked like wine, had the scent of wine, and a taste similar to wine. But it wasn?t wine ? at least not yet.

The liquid was only minutes old, produced when Patterson crushed a batch of zinfandel grapes that had been fermenting in a vat in his Berkeley garage for 10 days.

Fall is harvest season in the Bay Area, and hundreds of wineries in Napa and Sonoma counties ? as well as urban wine outposts like Berkeley?s Donkey and Goat and Broc Cellars ? go into overdrive to turn grapes into wine. Winemaking is so important to the local economy that glossy magazines, newspapers, and websites often cover small details of the harvest ? the brix number of the grapes, the rain or heat in the forecast, the optimum time to pick, and how this harvest compares to others.

But there is another kind of wine production, one rarely heralded and often dismissed as an anachronism, a throwback to another era. That is the work of the home winemaker. Toiling away in a basement or garage, pressing grapes with rented equipment, enlisting friends to haul and hose down, and tinkering with yeasts and fermentation in the hopes that their amateur efforts turn out something that is more than just drinkable, the home winemaker works in relative obscurity. Unable to legally sell their product, home winemakers are mostly known to family and friends. ?I am famous in my zip code,? Patterson joked recently. But their low profile does not mean they are any less passionate than some professionals.

?I am less interested every passing week in tracking down fancy bottles or putting a second mortgage on my house so I can buy red Burgundy,? said Patterson. ?But finding and making really good wine with some obscure grape from some corner of Italy ? that gets me really excited.?

Nobody is exactly sure how many home winemakers there are, but some estimates put the number at one million in the United States and Canada. While many home winemakers are clustered in places like California, where it is possible to acquire fresh grapes, others make wine by buying frozen grapes and having them shipped or purchasing kits that have a grape juice concentrate that just needs re-hydrating and fermentation.

Berkeley has long been a center of home wine making, in large part because of the presence of Oak Barrel Winecraft on San Pablo Avenue, one of about 200 home brewing stores in the U.S. ?The company, founded in 1957 as Oak Barrel Winery, originally focused on making its own wine. Selling winemaking equipment from Italy was almost a side business, according to Homer Smith, who has worked there since 1969. At that time, the clientele was mostly Italian and Portuguese families with a long tradition of making their own wine.

In the 1970s, following the back-to-the land movement, there was an upsurge in interest in making wine and Oak Barrel became a hub of activity for amateur winemakers, said Smith. Some even took to the craft so strongly they turned professional, such as Ken Rosenbaum, who opened Rosenbaum Cellars in Alameda, and Jack Cakebread, who started Cakebread Cellars in Napa.

Now the local food movement has prompted another uptick in the number of people making wine at home. When Bernie Rooney and his wife bought Oak Barrel in 1992, the store sold about six to seven tons of fresh grapes to local home winemakers a year, he said. This year, more than 300 customers purchased 90 tons of 16 different types of grapes, including cabernet grapes from Napa, Syrah grapes from Amador County, and sauvignon blanc grapes from Contra Costa County.

?In the last four to five years, the number of winemakers has gone up,? said Rooney.

A lot of people are drawn to home winemaking because they enjoy its precision, said Smith. And many are already accomplished cooks looking to expand their repertoire.

?They understand the romance of it,? said Smith. ?You have one shot in the course of a year to make it right. If you don?t make it right in that one shot you can forget it. They are individuals who like to improve things because they are always trying to make that next great bottle and you never think you?ve made it yet and that?s why you keep making it.?

On a recent Thursday in early October, Patterson was in Oak Barrel?s parking lot around 2 p.m. to pick up 250 pounds of syrah grapes from a vineyard in Amador County. Huge vats of purple grapes sat in white containers and workers used shovels and pick forks to feed them into a large commercial crusher.

Patterson, however, prefers to crush his own grapes in small batches. He and his friend Chris Bacon loaded four vats of whole grape clusters into the trunk of a car and drove off to his home on Derby Street.

This was the 17th?harvest for Patterson. Now 66, he didn?t start drinking wine until he was 40 (he preferred bourbon) and only turned to it to impress his soon-to-be father-in-law. But he quickly became fascinated by wine. He abandoned his banking job and soon was penning wine articles for magazines, including Wines and Vines, Wine Enthusiast, WineMaker, and Diablo. He started a blog, Blind Muscat, whose title was a word play on Patterson?s love of the grape and the fact that his eyesight is so poor he often has to hold instruction manuals within a few inches of his eyes to read them. He also co-authored a book on the history of the Concannan Winery in Livermore

Writing about wine, though satisfying, didn?t quell Patterson?s desires. In 1997, he decided to make his own wine, naming the center of his operations (his garage on Derby Street) Subterranean Cellars.

From the start there was nothing underground about Patterson?s wine. He is a born tinkerer, fascinated with gadgets. He instantly loved the technical aspect of making wine ? blending different grapes, playing with yeast, aging wine in oak or glass.

?At first, it was just so amazing that I could make something drinkable in my garage, I wanted to do more,? said Patterson. ?But what keeps me going is that it gives me something to do, a major something I do well, that?s mainly based on my senses and my muscles, which is entirely different from all the talky thinky stuff I?ve always done for a living. There are a lot of physical hobbies and sports and such that just aren?t on my agenda, because of my eyesight [legally blind], but this one I can handle just fine.?

A vat of grapes Patterson will turn into wine

Patterson?s knack for making drinkable wines was quickly recognized: a bulletin board in his garage is covered with numerous first place ribbons he has won from fairs and contests around the state. He often gives his wine whacky names, like the series that was a one off on classic European wines: Toscona Falso (false Chianti), Rioja Falsa, and Duro Fabricado (false Portuguese). In 2011, Patterson did a series from theoretical physics ? the Uncertainty Principle (a two-grape white blend), Unified Field Theory (a zinfandel-based field blend), and Le Photon Rouge, a lighter-bodied Rhone blend. In 2012, the vintages will be named for Shakespearean comedies, such as Midsummer Night?s Dream and Measure for Measure.

?He just likes being able to blend a couple of different grapes together, to come up with a new flavor, a new taste in wine,? said Smith, who has watched Patterson?s evolution as a winemaker. ?Something that is a little bit unique and different.?

In 2010, Patterson wrote Home Winemaking for Dummies, which instantly made him one of the country?s experts on the issue. (In a funny coincidence, one of the country?s other leading experts on home winemaking is also from Berkeley. Sheridan Warrick, the former director of the International House in Berkeley, is the author of The Way to Make Wine.)

Patterson generally purchases enough grapes to make about 200 gallons of wine, or about 60 cases, annually. ?I drink heavily,? he admits. It is also the limit legally permitted by the federal government. In addition to the syrah from Oak Barrel, in October Patterson sourced grapes from a backyard vineyard in the Dry Creek area near Healdsburg. The vineyard belongs to a couple who planted it in the old California style, with a mix of zinfandel, syrah, petit syrah, and carignan grapes.

?The blend is really made in the field, not the winery,? said Patterson.

That particular batch of grapes reflects Patterson?s desire to create unique wines, ones that can?t be found on a supermarket shelf. He strives to make wines that harken back to another era when California reds weren?t big, bold, high-alcohol fruit bombs. They had restraint.

?If I wanted an $8 Merlot I would just go buy one,? said Patterson. ?I wouldn?t want to make one. I like the oddball grapes and cooking up blends.?

For Patterson, winemaking is a social activity. He has a large group of friends who come and help with different parts of the process. A group drove up to Healdsburg to pick the field blend grapes and bring them back to Berkeley. Another set of friends came by to help with the crush. Bottling the wine always brings a crowd. Some of Patterson?s friends have been helping out for 15 years. Others are relative newcomers. Patterson rewards their efforts with a few bottles of wine at the end of the process.

?People do enjoy getting their hands dirty,? said Patterson. ?People really like playing farmer for a day. It gives them a little appreciation for the manual labor.?

On the Thursday that Patterson picked up the syrah grapes from Oak Barrel, Tricia Goldberg of Berkeley was waiting by the garage to help destem and crush them. She and Bacon lifted the dark red grapes out of a vat and loaded them into the destemmer while Patterson cranked the handle. The machine spat out green clusters of stems in one bucket and slightly crushed grapes in another. Little squirts of grape juice splattered Goldberg?s clothes, but she didn?t seem to mind.

?I love seeing all the stages that go into the making of wine, which I didn?t know much about,? said Goldberg.

After destemming, Patterson put the grapes into large plastic vats where they would ferment for about 10 days. Then he loads the grapes into a large wooden press that compresses the solids and squeezes out a red juice that tastes like grape juice with a hint of alcohol. Patterson transfers the juice into plastic 5-gallon carboys and lets the solids settle out. Only then does he put the wine into oak barrels to age for up to a year before bottling.

It?s a process that has Patterson constantly tinkering in the garage that sits next to his bungalow. On any given day, the door may be open and passersby can look in and see stacks of barrels, carboys, hoses, and whiff the permanent smell of fermenting wine. His neighbors and the students at nearby Longfellow Middle School are so used to the sight that they generally just wave and walk by.

The one person who doesn?t seem to have much patience for Patterson?s obsession is his wife, Nancy Freeman, a food writer. Although the couple has a food and wine consulting business together, she steers clear of his winemaking efforts. She doesn?t drink much, so she doesn?t get to partake in the wine, and all she is left with is a crammed garage and no place to park her car. But her impatience is mostly manufactured and seems to be an excuse to give her husband some old-fashioned ribbing. ?This is his project,? she said in resignation one day as she watched Patterson crush some grapes.

Considering Patterson?s fascination with wine and the innumerable blends he has yet to create, Freeman is right to downplay her objections.

?The wines of the world are so endlessly diverse you can never get tired of them,? said Patterson. ?You could never taste them all. That keeps me interested in both making wine and drinking it.?

First Person: Love and the Presidential Election

Yahoo News asked voters in politically split relationships to share what it's like to support one presidential candidate when their significant others don't. Here's one voter's story.

FIRST PERSON | Being a 21-year-old Democratic in Philadelphia -- the city of arts, independence and brotherly love -- comes as naturally as breathing. But being that person and being in a relationship with a 21-year-old Republican isn't always so easy.

I'm an avid supporter of President Obama, while my boyfriend, Ramon, supports Mitt Romney. Since the start of our relationship, we haven't exactly seen eye-to-eye on all things political. For example, I'm pro-choice and Ramon is pro-life. My major concerns are women's issues, while Ramon is more concerned about the economy.

There are some things we do agree on, like the need for education reform and more green jobs, but there aren't many. Because one of us usually becomes annoyed with the other during political conversations, we typically avoid the subject altogether. We decided not to watch debates together or try to change each other's minds. With this presidential race, however, avoiding politics at home can be difficult. In the past couple of months, we've been talking about the presidential race much more than we'd like to.

Just last week, after a long day of hearing my coworkers' political opinions (some of which irritated me beyond words), I took all of my bottled-up comments and railed them at Ramon.

"Why are you voting for Romney?" I asked.

"You really want to talk about this?" he replied, shaking his head.

He laughed. I was infuriated; I didn't find it one bit funny.

Naturally, I yelled, "It's not funny! Don't you care about me and my rights as a woman?! I can't believe you're such a conservative! I might as well be with a 90-year-old!"

Ramon walked over to me and kissed me on the forehead. "Please don't leave me for a 90-year-old," he jokingly pleaded.

I mustered up the meanest look I could and shot it right at him, though I felt myself succumbing to his adorable attitude.

"Look," he continued, "I have my reasons for voting for Romney, like you have your reasons for voting for Obama. It's nothing against you or other women, and you know that."

Deep down, I did know his strongest reasons for voting Republican were his economic concerns, so I said nothing.

"I love you even if you are a liberal," he said. With a resigned tone, I replied, "I know. I love you too -- even if you're not 90."

As you turn down the bread aisle, ads and coupons for hot dog buns and English muffins pop up on your screen. The electronics industry would like to make such personal navigators a reality, but, to do so, they need the next generation of microsensors.

Thanks to an ultrasensitive accelerometer -- a type of motion detector -- developed by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of Rochester, this new class of microsensors is a step closer to reality. Beyond consumer electronics, such sensors could help with oil and gas exploration deep within the Earth, could improve the stabilization systems of fighter jets, and could even be used in some biomedical applications where more traditional sensors cannot operate.

Caltech professor of applied physics Oskar Painter and his team describe the new device and its capabilities in an advance online publication of the journal Nature Photonics.

Rather than using an electrical circuit to gauge movements, their accelerometer uses laser light. And despite the device's tiny size, it is an extremely sensitive probe of motion. Thanks to its low mass, it can also operate at a large range of frequencies, meaning that it is sensitive to motions that occur in tens of microseconds, thousands of times faster than the motions that the most sensitive sensors used today can detect.

"The new engineered structures we made show that optical sensors of very high performance are possible, and one can miniaturize them and integrate them so that they could one day be commercialized," says Painter, who is also codirector of Caltech's Kavli Nanoscience Institute.

Although the average person may not notice them, microchip accelerometers are quite common in our daily lives. They are used in vehicle airbag deployment systems, in navigation systems, and in conjunction with other types of sensors in cameras and cell phones. They have successfully moved into commercial use because they can be made very small and at low cost.

Accelerometers work by using a sensitive displacement detector to measure the motion of a flexibly mounted mass, called a proof mass. Most commonly, that detector is an electrical circuit. But because laser light is one of the most sensitive ways to measure position, there has been interest in making such a device with an optical readout. For example, projects such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) rely on optical interferometers, which use laser light reflecting off mirrors separated by kilometers of distance to sensitively measure relative motion of the end mirrors. Lasers can have very little intrinsic noise -- meaning that their intensity fluctuates little -- and are typically limited by the quantum properties of light itself, so they make it much easier to detect very small movements.

People have tried, with limited success, to make miniature versions of these large-scale interferometers. One stumbling block for miniaturization has been that, in general, the larger the proof mass, the larger the resulting motion when the sensor is accelerated. So it is typically easier to detect accelerations with larger sensors. Also, when dealing with light rather than electrons -- as in optical accelerometers -- it is a challenge to integrate all the components (the lasers, detectors, and interferometer) into a micropackage.

"What our work really shows is that we can take a silicon microchip and scale this concept of a large-scale optical interferometer all the way down to the nanoscale," Painter says. "The key is this little optical cavity we engineered to read out the motion."

The optical cavity is only about 20 microns (millionths of a meter) long, a single micron wide, and a few tenths of a micron thick. It consists of two silicon nanobeams, situated like the two sides of a zipper, with one side attached to the proof mass. When laser light enters the system, the nanobeams act like a "light pipe," guiding the light into an area where it bounces back and forth between holes in the nanobeams. When the tethered proof mass moves, it changes the gap between the two nanobeams, resulting in a change in the intensity of the laser light being reflected out of the system. The reflected laser signal is in fact tremendously sensitive to the motion of the proof mass, with displacements as small as a few femtometers (roughly the diameter of a proton) being probed on the timescale of a second.

It turns out that because the cavity and proof mass are so small, the light bouncing back and forth in the system pushes the proof mass -- and in a special way: when the proof mass moves away, the light helps push it further, and when the proof mass moves closer, the light pulls it in. In short, the laser light softens and damps the proof mass's motion.

"Most sensors are completely limited by thermal noise, or mechanical vibrations -- they jiggle around at room temperature, and applied accelerations get lost in that noise," Painter says. "In our device, the light applies a force that tends to reduce the thermal motion, cooling the system." This cooling -- down to a temperature of three kelvins (about -270?C) in the current devices -- increases the range of accelerations that the device can measure, making it capable of measuring both extremely small and extremely large accelerations.

"We made a very sensitive sensor that, at the same time, can also measure very large accelerations, which is valuable in many applications," Painter says.

The team envisions its optical accelerometers becoming integrated with lasers and detectors in silicon microchips. Microelectronics companies have been working for the past 10 or 15 years to try to integrate lasers and optics into their silicon microelectronics. Painter says that a lot of engineering work still needs to be done to make this happen, but adds that "because of the technological advancements that have been made by these companies, it looks like one can actually start making microversions of these very sensitive optical interferometers."

"Professor Painter's research in this area nicely illustrates how the Engineering and Applied Science faculty at Caltech are working at the edges of fundamental science to invent the technologies of the future," says Ares Rosakis, chair of Caltech's Division of Engineering and Applied Science.
