Iraq war logs in Manning case 'hit us in the face': U.S. officer

By Tom Ramstack

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The U.S. Army was overwhelmed when WikiLeaks published more than 700,000 secret diplomatic and war documents handed over by soldier Bradley Manning, a retired officer testified in the sentencing phase of the convicted private's court-martial.

"The ones that hit us in the face were the Iraq logs," retired Brigadier General Robert Carr said in a Fort Meade, Maryland court on Wednesday, a day after a military judge found Manning guilty of 19 charges over the leaks in 2010, the biggest breach of classified data in U.S. history.

"No one had ever had to deal with this number of documents," Carr said.

A prosecutor told the sentencing hearing that the leaks caused military intelligence officials to rethink how much access to allow low level intelligence analysts like Manning.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind began hearing arguments on Wednesday on how long a sentence he should face, with the soldier's lawyers expected to argue for leniency.

While Manning, 25, was acquitted on the most serious charge of aiding the enemy, sparing him life without parole, he could still face decades in a military prison.

The slightly built Army private first class was in Baghdad in 2010 when he was arrested and charged with leaking files including videos of a 2007 attack by an American Apache helicopter gunship in Baghdad that killed a dozen people, including two Reuters news staff, diplomatic cables, and secret details on prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

TALIBAN TIE

Carr testified that the leaks allowed Taliban militants in Afghanistan to track down a citizen of that country who had worked with U.S. intelligence.

"The Taliban killed him and tied him to the disclosures," Carr said. He said that would deter other intelligence sources.

Manning's lawyers were expected to argue that the Army private was not trying to jeopardize U.S. national security. He did not testify during his trial or during the first day of his sentencing hearing.

A prosecutor, Major Ashden Fein, said Manning's leaks "have impacted the entire system" for granting defense analysts access to classified information.

Some observers pointed out that the case of Manning, as well as that of former CIA security contractor Edward Snowden, illustrated the risk inherent in granting security clearance so broadly. Snowden last month released to media documents detailing U.S. programs to monitor phone and internet usage.

U.S. intelligence agencies grant analysts broad access to classified files in hopes that they will connect disparate pieces of evidence to interpret events and avoid the sort of lapses that led to clues being overlooked before the September 11, 2001 hijacked plane attacks and the bombing of the Boston Marathon in April.

"As with any type of computer database and security, the weakest link is the person who's operating it," said Scott White, a professor of homeland security management at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

There is a risk in restricting access, he said: "Do you slow the intelligence process down by putting more and more limits on your own people?"

In a court martial that stretched over two months, military prosecutors had argued that Manning became a "traitor" to his country when he handed over files to WikiLeaks, thrusting the anti-secrecy website and its founder Julian Assange into the international spotlight.

Observers said the verdict could have "a chilling effect" on WikiLeaks by making potential sources of documents in the United States more wary about handing over secret information.

It could also encourage the United States to seek to prosecute Assange for his role in publishing the information.

Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean embassy in London for over a year to avoid extradition to Sweden, where two women have accused him of sexual assault. The activist says he fears Sweden might hand him over to U.S. authorities.

Petersen Tried To Auction Hot Rod Without Mentioning It Was A ...

The Petersen has been in the news a lot lately, and while there?s many opinions about selling part of their collection, it?s a safe bet that everyone agrees that descriptions of the cars to be auctioned should be accurate. Unfortunately, that didn?t seem to be the case with the hot rod called the Boothill Express.

The Boothill Express hot rod from the Petersen collection is currently being offered for auction by Auctions America. Though it was not mentioned anywhere in the lot description until we called them on it, this Boothill Express is not the original one, nor is it the one shown in the pictures on the auction?s page. To explain what?s going on, let?s talk a bit about the car.

Petersen Tried To Auction Hot Rod Without Mentioning It Was A ReplicaS

The Boothill Express is a product of a strange, wonderful time in American car culture when there was a thriving subset of hot rod culture known as ?kinky? hot rods. The kinky hot rods were flamboyant, strange machines, part raw American muscle and part crazy art car. The more bonkers the better, and the Boothill Express, designed and built by Ray Fahner, is an ideal example.

The Boothill Express is built from an actual 1850 wooden horse-drawn funeral coach, allegedly once used to transport Jesse James gang member Bob Younger to his grave at Boot Hill. Hence the name, you see. The main body of the funeral coach has been kept remarkably the same, though the wagon wheels have been replaced by fat racing slicks and the horses replaced with a mid-mounted 426 Hemi V8.

The reins have been replaced with a Model T steering wheel connected to a ?63 Beetle?s steering box, and there?s velocity stacks and eight massive headers and enough chrome to drown a Cylon. There?s even a pair of huge brass carriage lights from India. It?s a pretty striking looking rod, in a certain macabre, irreverent, Old West sort of way.

It?s a real one-of-a-kind sort of car. Except it?s not.

Petersen Tried To Auction Hot Rod Without Mentioning It Was A ReplicaS

The Boothill Express proved so popular that a fiberglass replica was built that was better able to be driven and drag raced; the original, being based on an 1850 wooden wagon, was unsurprisingly a bit fragile for a lot of that sort of abuse. The one from the Petersen collection that?s being auctioned is this car, the fiberglass replica.

There?s nothing wrong with auctioning the second car; it has a good deal of historic value itself. The issue is that if a car appears to be a one-of-a-kind creation, and a second variant exists, it?s the kind of thing the buyer has a right to know. Especially if the car being sold is the copy, not the original, and made from very different materials and methods than the original.

Petersen Tried To Auction Hot Rod Without Mentioning It Was A ReplicaS

Part of what made the Boothill Express so remarkable was that it was built of an actual, genuine 1850 funeral wagon that is believed to have taken a member of the James gang to his grave. That?s a historically significant artifact, and a fiberglass replica, while it retains much of the same look, is not.

The description of the car being auctioned is mostly accurate, and gives details particular to the replica, such as the 350 ci Chevy engine mocked up to look like a Hemi. The original auction posting, which has been up until today, did not state is that the car is fiberglass, and actually suggested that the car is built from the original funeral wagon, saying

By 1967, Fahrner completed his signature creation, the outrageous ?Boothill Express,? based on an actual circa-1850 horse-drawn funeral coach by Cunningham of New York, which reportedly carried James Gang member Bob Younger to ?Boot Hill.? Features include ornate carved moldings, brass lamps reportedly dating to late 18th-century India and proper funeral equipment, including tasseled velvet curtains and polished coffin rails.

And also, in the bulleted list of features at the start of the description, it reads

? Based on an actual circa-1850 horse-drawn funeral coach by Cunningham of New York

? Reportedly carried James Gang member Bob Younger to ?Boot Hill.?

I suppose it?s possible they meant ?based on? to be taken in a much looser context than many people would read it. Perhaps they?re not explicitly stating that this car was built from the very same wood and iron nails as the original, but it sure as hell sounded like it.

To be clear, the lot description up until just a few hours ago did not state that the car is a fiberglass replica of the original car. In direct response to my inquiries via the PR firm contracted to the Petersen, Auctions America, who was responsible for writing the copy, added this addendum:

Please note we understand that the Boothill Express offered here was built several months after the original and was constructed out of both wood and fiberglass utiizing the original molds. It is fitted with a 331 cubic inch Hemi engine and is repoted to previously run and drive as recently as the 1990's. This paticular example was used primarily as the "outdoor car" on the Drag and Wheelstander show circuit in the period and remains in very presentable overall condition. Additionally, the photos of the Boothill Express pictured in the auction catalogue are of the "indoor car" which currently resides in a private collection. Please speak with an Auctions America specialist prior to biding if there are any additional questions.

Petersen Tried To Auction Hot Rod Without Mentioning It Was A ReplicaS

The original sold at auction in 2009 for $126,500 and again in 2010 for $88,000, and the lot description on the Auctions America site give the estimate at $25,000 to $35,000, so it stands to reason the auction house knew what they have isn?t the original, which currently resides at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The fact that the site did not mention that the car was a fiberglass replica until Jalopnik brought it to their attention can only mean one of two things, neither very flattering. First, it's possible the auction house was unaware of the original car or thought they had the original. That's highly doubtful, since there are obvious differences in the cars and that their estimated price was so much lower than what the original had sold for.

The other option is that they were aware that the car was the replica, and neglected to to mention that fact. Which seems like a pretty damn big omission. I can't speculate on the motives of the auction house, but hypothetically, leaving out that information could suggest (as the copy of the original lot description did) to an uninformed bidder that the car was in fact original, and that could have an effect on the final price of the car. As in more money.

Also, if this thing really will sell for$25,000 - $35,000, what a great alternative this would be to some boring old Camry or Civic or something. Something like this could really make that daily commute exciting, even if no dead gunslingers were ever laying in there.

The full original copy of the ad is reproduced here; the pictures are still currently of the original:

? 350-cid OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Hydra-Matic transmission

? One of the most famous custom creations by Ray Fahner

  • Based on an actual circa-1850 horse-drawn funeral coach by Cunningham of New York
  • Reportedly carried James Gang member Bob Younger to ?Boot Hill.?
  • Expertly detailed

Chassis no. S2362703

350-cid OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Hydra-Matic transmission, CAE tubular straight front axle with transverse leaf spring, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and two-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 98-inches.

To thousands of custom car fans, Ray Fahrner was the genius behind some of the most memorable and radical show rods of all time. Fahrner, who passed away in 2005, rose to prominence in the late 1950s with his groundbreaking 1932 Ford Roadster Pickup dubbed the Eclipse. Once on the map, Fahrner?s Missouri-based shop pushed the limits of automotive design, echoing the unbridled creativity and experimental nature of America during the 1960s.

The chrome-plated suspension features a CAE tubular front axle and hairpins, along with 1963 VW steering gear, full-elliptic rear leaf springs, a 1948 Ford rear end and drum brakes. The totally outrageous Hemi V-8 is actually a small block Chevy, mocked up with velocity stacks jutting through the top of the hearse body, while eight individual pipes remove the exhaust gases. A TorqueFlite automatic transmission handles the power, while the car?s aggressive rake is provided by a pair of E-T spindle-mounted front wheels, with Cragar S/S wheels and Goodyear Blue Streak slicks at the rear. Other features include a Ford Model T steering wheel, a Moon hydraulic throttle and a canister-style fuel tank, as well as a Stewart Warner instrument cluster. The open bench-type front seat features black diamond-tufted upholstery.

The Boothill Express formed part of Fahrner?s ?Boothill Caravan,? which toured drag-strips and auto shows during the late 1960s. In the best 1960s show-rod tradition, the vehicle was immortalized with the 1967 release of a 1:24-scale plastic model kit by Monogram, complete with a skeleton packing a six-shooter and wearing a 10-gallon hat. Due to continued strong public demand, the model kit was reissued in 1994.

Today, the Boothill Express benefits from a recent expert detailing and is offered in period correct and largely unrestored condition. It is ready to resume its show career, or to form the prized centerpiece of a collection of the most famous and iconic show rods ever created. The Boothill Express remains a lasting tribute to the wild genius of Ray Fahrner, a custom car legend with an unbridled imagination.

Church identifies victims killed in Indianapolis bus crash

A youth pastor and his wife, along with another church member, were killed in Saturday's bus crash on the north side of Indianapolis.

Jeff Leffew with Colonial Hills Baptist Church told reporters Sunday morning that Chad Phelps, his wife Courtney, and Tonya Weindorf died in the crash, which occurred on Keystone Ave. as the bus exited the off-ramp from I-465 a little after 4:15 pm.

The Phelpses, who were in their mid-twenties, were expecting their second child next month. Their two-year-old son survived the crash.

Chad Phelps is the son of the church's senior pastor, Chuck Phelps. Tonya Weindorf is a longtime member of the church and is survived by five children.

Leffew said Weindorf was on the bus because her special needs son wanted to attend the camp.

"She wanted to go and make it a good week," he said. "According to her husband, it was a great week. That's who Tonya was."

"All these folks are special to us as members here, as friends. Our church grieves now," said Leffew. "They're with God in heaven. We know that without a doubt, but we grieve the fact they're not here with us. We miss them. We ask for your prayer and support. We ask for your respect for the families that have lost loved ones."

Nine teenagers remain hospitalized Sunday. Five are at IU Health Methodist, three are at Riley Hospital for Children IU Health and one is at St. Vincent. One is in critical condition.

Members of the Colonial Hills Baptist Church Youth Group were riding on two buses returning from Michigan summer camp when one of the buses crashed.

Thirty-seven people were on the bus when it crashed, most of them teenagers. Five of the passengers had to be extricated from the bus. Injuries ranged from critical to serious.

They were less than two miles from the church when the crash occurred. The bus driver said the bus brakes failed.

Leffew told reporters Sunday that a church member was driving the bus. He also said the church owns the bus.

Twenty-six people went to area hospitals for treatment. Their ages ranged from a toddler to teenagers.

Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health admitted five patients, all teenagers, including the patient transferred from IU Health Methodist. They are all in good condition. The toddler was among those treated and released. Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health received a total of 10 patients from the bus accident.

In all, 26 units were dispatched from the Indianapolis Fire Department, and numerous agencies responded to the scene at Keystone Ave. near 96th St. The crash closed Keystone for several hours. The bus has been moved to another location for inspection.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metro Police and Indianapolis Fire Departments.

Water molecules control inactivation and recovery of potassium channels

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Just 12 molecules of water cause the long post-activation recovery period required by potassium ion channels before they can function again. Using molecular simulations that modeled a potassium channel and its immediate cellular environment, atom for atom, scientists have revealed this new mechanism in the function of a nearly universal biological structure, with implications ranging from fundamental biology to the design of pharmaceuticals.

Kerry Washington gets first Emmy nod for 'Scandal'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kerry Washington knows just how to celebrate her Emmy nomination: by going to work.

"I just feel more indebted to them than ever before," the 35-year-old actress said Thursday as she prepared to meet the show's cast and crew to run through the first script of the new season of "Scandal." ''I'm really excited that I get to see them and thank them today, because there's no way you can pull off playing a character like Olivia on a show that spans 22 episodes without having real gladiators in the trenches with you."

Washington was nominated for lead actress in a drama for her portrayal of high-powered political strategist and soft-hearted incurable romantic Olivia Pope.

The actress is among only five non-white acting nominees in the field of 96, and the first black actress to compete in the lead dramatic category since Cicely Tyson was nominated in 1995.

If Washington wins when the Emmy Awards are presented in September, she will be the first black actress ever to do so.

While she declined to address the history of the Emmys, she called the recognition "wonderful."

"I feel really excited and proud to live in a world where a show that embodies so much diversity on so many levels ? because our show is so diverse with regard to race and ethnicity and gender and sexual orientation ? that a show that really celebrates inclusivity is able to be such a success both in the U.S. and overseas," she said. "That's something that I'm really proud to be a part of, and I'm proud to be a citizen in a world where that's possible."

The nomination comes at an exciting time in Washington's life: She's also a newlywed, marrying professional football player Nnamdi Asomugha just last month.

But Olivia Pope, with her often messy personal life, is the kind of character an actress dreams of playing.

"She is so inspirational but also really, really flawed," Washington said. "There are qualities about her that you want to have, but there are also qualities that you just think, 'Oh honey, if we were friends, I would send you to a really good shrink.'"

Year after Colo. theater attack, gun debate rages

DENVER (AP) -- The last time Colorado enacted gun control measures was in the wake of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, and once the laws were on the books there was little acrimony.

The state's latest batch of gun control laws ? coming after a gunman's deadly rampage at a suburban Denver movie theater a year ago ? has sparked a struggle over guns that shows little signs of fading. Gun rights advocates are trying to recall two state senators who backed the package, and dozens of GOP county sheriffs are suing to overturn it.

"This is going to remain a political hot potato for Democrats for many, many months," said gun-rights activist Ari Armstrong.

Ironically, in the months after the gunman's shooting spree left 12 people dead and injured 70 others, there was little public discussion of gun control here. The shooting at a midnight showing of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" occurred in a key swing county in one of the most hotly-contested battleground states in last year's presidential election.

But President Barack Obama, seeking re-election, did not bring up gun control in a state that cherishes its western frontier image. Neither did most Colorado Democrats.

It wasn't until December's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school left 20 first-graders and six adults dead that gun control rose in prominence. By March, Colorado became the only state outside the Democratic Party's coastal bases to pass sweeping gun control measures, including universal background checks and a ban on high-capacity magazines.

After the Columbine attack, voters closed a loophole that allowed buyers of firearms at gun shows to evade background checks. In the wake of the Aurora massacre, the prospects for more gun control in this libertarian-minded state seemed shaky at best.

Soon after police say a former neuroscience graduate student named James Holmes, armed with a rifle and a high-capacity magazine able to fire 100 bullets, wreaked his carnage, the Democratic lawmaker whose district is home to the Century 16 movie theater where the shooting took place began drafting gun control bills, hoping Coloradans would be more receptive to them.

They weren't. "There was a sense of political fear," recalled state Rep. Rhonda Fields, who became a legislator after her son and his girlfriend were shot to death in 2005 to stop him from testifying at a murder trial.

In a television interview days after the shooting, Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper appeared to cast doubt on the effectiveness of new gun control laws.

Despite a push by gun control groups and some relatives of those slain in Aurora, moderators at the presidential debates didn't bring up the topic. Craig Hughes, a top adviser to Obama's Colorado campaign, said it felt inappropriate to raise the issue while emotions were so raw. "The right course here was to not politicize it," he said.

Hickenlooper said he had quiet conversations around the state after that and was struck by wide support for universal background checks.

In November, Democrats won both the state House and Senate as Colorado helped re-elect Obama. And on Dec. 12, Hickenlooper declared that "the time is right" to talk about gun control.

Two days later in Connecticut, Adam Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother, then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire before killing himself. The attack shocked a country that had grown hardened to mass shootings. Obama vowed an all-out push for gun control.

In Colorado, a similar push was already queued up.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's gun control organization, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, hired four lobbyists to help push gun bills in Colorado. Vice President Joe Biden called state legislators to urge them to vote for the package. Biden told them that Colorado, with its western traditions, could help set the tone for national gun policy.

To Republicans and gun rights groups, the message was clear. "The Obama administration and these East Coast politicians decided that, as Colorado goes, so goes the rest of the nation,'" said GOP state Rep. Mark Waller.

GOP legislators fought furiously to delay the bills' passage. Hundreds of demonstrators circled the state capitol and packed the legislative chambers. Democrats were confident voters were on their side. They have not lost a presidential, gubernatorial or U.S. Senate race for more than a decade, powered by a combination of a growing Hispanic voting population and an influx of coastal moderates.

"The voices that are the loudest (in protest) are not the ones that determine elections here," Laura Chapin, a Democratic strategist who worked for local gun control groups, said after the bills passed.

For gun rights advocates, the movie theater attack exposed serious problems that Democrats were ignoring: Bans on guns in public areas, and the issue of mental health. Holmes purchased his guns legally but also had seen a psychiatrist who feared he was dangerous.

The Century 16 complex forbade guns. If viewers were armed, gun-rights groups argued, they could have stopped the attack. Advocates also noted that, from the limited information that has become public, some officials at the University of Colorado, Denver, where Holmes studied, may have been warned that he could turn violent.

"Let's not pretend our options are binary ? do nothing or pass more restrictive gun laws," said Armstrong, the gun-rights activist.

The legislature agreed to a $20 million Hickenlooper plan to expand mental health services. But the gun control package got the most attention. The bill banning larger-capacity magazines squeaked through by a single vote in the state Senate.

Meanwhile, Democratic strongholds like New York, Connecticut and California passed some measures, but gun control packages died in Congress and in liberal-leaning states like Minnesota, Oregon, Washington and even Biden's home state, Delaware.

In June, Colorado gun activists collected enough signatures to trigger recall elections for two state senators, including that chamber's president. If Democratic efforts to block them fail, the recall votes could be the first electoral test of post-Sandy Hook gun control. Fifty-four county sheriffs filed a federal lawsuit to strike down the laws as violations of the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Tom Sullivan, whose son Alex was celebrating his 27th birthday at the theater when he was killed, said he shied away from the gun debate at first. But he went to the state legislature to watch the debate and was at the arguments against action.

"I'm not going to shrug my shoulders," Sullivan said, "and say this is the cost of living in a free society: my son's going to be murdered by a guy with a 100-round magazine walking into a theater on his birthday."

Former Google, Twitter Execs Launch ?Homebrew? Venture Firm

Two well-known Silicon Valley Web executives have launched a venture capital firm to finance and advise early-stage technology companies, yet another sign of the growing appetite of investors to place bets on younger startups.

It took former Twitter executive Satya Patel, 38 years old, and longtime former Google and YouTube executive Hunter Walk, 39, just four months to raise a $35 million fund?largely from a university endowment, a foundation, and two other institutional investors.

Their firm, called Homebrew (an homage to a celebrated Silicon Valley computer hobbyist group in the 1970s), won?t just write checks. As former product executives, Patel and Walk say they plan to take an active role in their portfolio companies, helping to shape their products and organizations in what venture capitalists call the ?seed? stage.

?We want to help the next set of entrepreneurs and companies be built,? Walk said, adding that he and Patel ?converged on the fact there?s a small number of seed=stage funds that were started by operators,? meaning former product executives.

The duo says it will focus on startups that help businesses, software developers and individuals to ?drive economic growth? through ?simpler, cheaper and more direct access to technology, information and customers.?

Walk said Homebrew is interested in companies that can help ?CTOs, CIOs and CMOs, and to ?disrupt? industries such as financial services, hospitality and retail, among others. It will target 10 or fewer investments per year, plunking down between $250,000 and $800,000 per bet.

Homebrew joins a growing group of seed-stage capital firms that have formed in recent years, including Baseline Ventures, Cowboy Ventures, Harrison Metal Capital, Freestyle Capital and Bowery Capital, some of whom also were started by former product-management leaders like Patel and Walk.

As the valuations given to young startups have risen significantly, veteran venture-capital firms have sought to make investments earlier in the startup life-cycle or risk being left behind.

Homebrew also will have a group of notable advisors who will help its portfolio companies. Among them is Jeff Lawson, chief executive of Twilio, which makes software for Web and app developers.

?While every investor has the capability of adding some value (nobody thinks of themselves as dumb money), the mission of Homebrew is to be ?boutique,? if you will, and really help build companies one?or a few?at a time versus spreading itself thinly,? Lawson said, in an email. ?I think it?s new and different.?

In addition to their operating experience, Patel and Walk also have a substantial history with investments. Patel, who formerly worked at venture firm Battery Ventures, was involved in teams that invested in established startups like OpenTable and Angie?s List, among others. He advises many startups, including the travel site Gogobot.

Walk personally invested or advised companies that include Karma Science, which was acquired by Facebook , and Live Star, which was acquired by Pinterest.

Woman Who Bragged That She Was 'The Queen Of Tax Fraud' On Facebook Gets 21 Years In Jail

The stupid never seems to stop when it comes to dumb criminals. Whether it's accidentally dialing 911 during their murder-plotting or jumping on YouTube to make sure grandma knows what a great little bank-robber you are, there's just something about these criminals that make them go internet stupid. How else could you explain when these guys bilk money out of companies and governments, then jump on Twitter to taunt the authorities? Criminals, by and large, are stupid.

Well, let's put another one up on our wall of jack-ass-ery, shall we? Meet Rashia Wilson of Tampa, Florida. Rashia is the self-proclaimed "queen of IRS tax fraud." And she self-proclaimed this everywhere, including on her very personal Facebook page which had her very verifiable name splashed all over it. And, I have to admit, Rashia was very good at IRS tax fraud.

Prosecutors have said Wilson was among the most brazen thieves to commit identity theft tax refund fraud in Tampa. In 2011, she boasted to be Tampa's "queen of IRS tax fraud" in a Facebook post while stealing as much as $20 million, according to court documents.

A prosecutor said Wilson used the money stolen from taxpayers for "personal greed and glorification." Wilson bought a $90,000 car and a $30,000 birthday party for her 1-year-old daughter with the money, according to court documents.

See? Really good. What she was less good at was keeping that hidden. After brazenly posting about how awesome at crime she was on Facebook, the authorities came more quickly than...no, you know what? I'm not going to make that joke. They just got her, okay?

In any case, faced with 22 years in the clink, Rashia pleaded guilty and then wrote the court an apology letter and begged for leniency. The judge obliged, knocking a whole year off and saddling her with a measly 21 years in the federal pen. Nicely done, Rashia Wilson! Enjoy your stay!

Microsoft Delivers Outlook to iPhone and iPad Users

Starting today, iPhone and iPad users will be able to get many of the same features of Outlook in the form of in a new application available from the iTunes Store.

Using what Microsoft has dubbed OWA for iPad and OWA for iPhone, users will be able to access Office 365 accounts from their devices. In addition to giving users access to their email without being online, the application also seems to act as another Trojan horse for Microsoft?s Metro-design language and Office 365.

The application?s Mail, Calendar and People areas sit behind a sort of Start Screen that features Live Tiles that quickly update the user on their latest email, and documents. In fact, the entire experience isn?t too far-flung from the designs of Office 365 for iPhone, Office 365 for iPad as well as Outlook.com and Windows 8.1.

India sends its last telegrams as service ends

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India's last telegram went out late Sunday, marking the end of a service that provided millions of Indians with a fast and reliable mode of communication.

Hundreds of people thronged the 75 telegraph offices remaining in the country Sunday to send their last telegrams to friends or family as a keepsake.

Shameem Akhtar, a top official in the state-run telecommunications company, said Monday that it had increased staff at all telegram offices to handle the huge rush.

The company says declining revenues had forced the service to close. It had become redundant in an age of email, reliable landlines and ubiquitous cellphones.

Zimmerman jury asks for 'clarificaton' on manslaughter charge

SANFORD, Fla--After more than 12 hours of deliberation, the jury in the George Zimmerman case has asked the court for "clarification" on the charge of manslaughter. The question is likely to make the defense nervous, since it suggests the all-female jury could be seriously weighing a conviction on the lesser charge in the case.

Both the prosecution and defense agreed that the jurors need to ask a more specific question, saying they cannot engage in "general discussions" about the charge. Judge Debra Nelson agreed to send the attorneys' response back to the jurors around 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

Zimmerman, a 29-year-old volunteer neighborhood watchman, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, whom the defendant shot during a scuffle in a nearby gated community on Feb 26, 2012. The jury was also told it could convict Zimmerman on the lesser charge of manslaughter, or acquit him as not guilty of any crime. Zimmerman argued he acted in self defense.

The jury was told in its instructions that a Zimmerman merited a manslaughter charge if he killed Martin intentionally.

The jurors deliberated for 12.5 hours--including a one-hour lunch during which they were allowed to discuss the case--before alerting the court they had a question. "May we please have clarification on the instructions regarding manslaughter?" the question read. The sequestered, anonymous jurors only made one other request during their deliberations--for an itemized list of all the evidence presented during the trial on Friday.

For the jury to convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder, the prosecution would have to prove that Zimmerman had ?a depraved mind without regard for human life? when he shot Martin. A lesser manslaughter conviction could be handed down if the jury believes Zimmerman had no lawful reason to kill Martin. Zimmerman is legally justified in killing Martin if the jury finds he had a ?reasonable? belief that his own life was in jeopardy or that he could suffer bodily harm from Martin.

In closing arguments Friday, Assistant District Attorney John Guy argued that it was the unarmed Martin who tried to defend himself. ?Ask yourself, ?Who lost the fight??? Guy said. ?That child had every right to be afraid of a strange man following him, first in his car and then on foot. And did that child not have the right to defend himself from that strange man??

Zimmerman?s attorney Mark O?Mara argued over three hours in his closing remarks that Martin was not ?unarmed.? He dragged out a chunk of concrete and laid it in front of the jury to make the point that Martin used the pavement as a ?weapon? against his client when he allegedly slammed his head against it in their scuffle.

Before beginning their deliberations, jurors received the following instructions pertaining to manslaughter:

MANSLAUGHTER
To prove the crime of Manslaughter, the State must prove the following two elements beyond a reasonable doubt:
1. Trayvon Martin is dead.
2. George Zimmerman intentionally committed an act or acts that caused the death of Trayvon Martin.

George Zimmerman cannot be guilty of manslaughter by committing a merely negligent act or if the killing was either justifiable or excusable homicide:
Each of us has a duty to act reasonably toward others. If there is a violation of that duty, without any conscious intention to harm, that violation is negligence.
The killing of a human being is justifiable homicide and lawful if necessarily done while resisting an attempt to murder or commit a felony upon George Zimmerman, or to commit a felony in any dwelling house in which George Zimmerman was at the time of the killing.

The killing of a human being is excusable, and therefore lawful, under any one of the following three circumstances:
1. When the killing is committed by accident and misfortune in doing any lawful act by lawful means with usual ordinary caution and without any unlawful intent, or
2. When the killing occurs by accident and misfortune in the heat of passion, upon any sudden and sufficient provocation, or
3. When the killing is committed by accident and misfortune resulting from a sudden combat, if a dangerous weapon is not used and the killing is not done in a cruel or unusual manner.

In order to convict of manslaughter by act, it is not necessary for the State to prove that George Zimmerman had an intent to cause death, only an intent to commit an act that was not merely negligent, justified, or excusable and which caused death.

If you find George Zimmerman committed Manslaughter, and you also find beyond a reasonable doubt that during the commission of the Manslaughter, George Zimmerman carried, displayed, used, threatened to use, or attempted to use a firearm, you should check the appropriate box on the verdict form which I will discuss with you later in these instructions.

Enchanting Forest of Primeval Trees Found in the Gulf of Mexico

Fifty-two thousand years is a long, long time for anything to survive?but that is how old scientists estimate a grove of huge bald cypress trees off the coast of Mobile, Alabama, to be.

The ancient forest was discovered by scuba divers some years ago after being buried for thousands of years under ocean sediment.

Located some 60 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, the forest?s trees are so well-preserved that Ben Raines, executive director of the nonprofit Weeks Bay Foundation and one of the first divers to explore the site, tells Live Science that they still smell like fresh cypress sap.

While we might assume water would cause wood to rot,?wood can actually survive for long periods of time when it is exposed to wetness.

Archaeologists have found the remains of?wooden ships dating back to Roman times as well as an intact?wooden chest (still guarding its store of ancient medicines) in the Mediterranean, as well as (just earlier this year) discovering?wooden writing tablets in the River Walbrook in London. The cypress grove of course predates the Romans.

A local dive shop owner had come upon the forest a year after Hurricane Katrina. A fisherman had told him about a site that was curiously rich with fish and wildlife. While he told Raines about his discovery, he did not reveal its location until 2012 and only ?after swearing [Raines] to secrecy,? says Live Science.

On diving to the site, Raines was amazed to see that the dislodged stumps, some of which were the length of trucks, had become a reef for a marvelous array of fish, crustaceans, sea anemones and other marine life. Many of the trees had fallen over; after swimming their length, Raines says that ?you just feel like you?re in this fairy world.?

But like some magical fantasy world, the primeval cypress forest could soon disappear.

Grant Harley, a University of Southern Mississippi dendrochronologist (someone who studies tree rings), says that the many marine animals burrowing into the cypress trees are causing it to deteriorate and, with no way to stop this happening, scientists are in a race against time to learn as much as they can from the ancient trees.

Bald cypress trees have been known to live for thousands of years and scientists are?performing radiocarbon tests to determine their age.

The scientists also hope to study the trees? growth rings as these can reveal fascinating details about the history of the Gulf of Mexico thousands of years ago and what is called the?Wisconsin Glacial Episode, a time when sea levels were much lower than they currently are. They do so knowing that time is running short.

Bringing samples up to the surface of course comes with its own hazards:?Waterlogged wood retains its shape so long as it is wet; once exposed to air, the excess water evaporates and the wood shrinks and becomes distorted.

Climate change also poses a danger to such amazing sites. The rising sea levels, increasing rainfall and melting of ice are revealing other ancient sites but also?putting them at risk.

Melting ice in the Swiss Alps has revealed artifacts left thousands of years ago by the Romans and other ancient peoples (sandals, leather pants) but, by exposing them to the elements, has also contributed to the artifacts? destruction.

A higher than average level of precipitation is also causing erosion and literally washing away?Peru?s?Chan Chan, a nine-mile-square city made of unfired mud brick that was erected some 1,000 years ago.

The warmer, wetter world we are living in could both tell us much more about our shared history and prehistory but may also make it disappear before we have a chance to find it.

(AP Photo/ Alexander Zemlianichenko Jr)

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian immigration officials said Saturday they have not received an application from Edward Snowden, the U.S. National Security Agency leaker who wants to get asylum in Russia.

Snowden came to Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport on June 23 from Hong Kong, apparently intending to board a flight to Cuba. But he did not get on that flight and is believed to have spent the last three weeks marooned in the airport's transit zone.

On Friday, he met with human rights activists there and said he would seek Russian asylum, at least as a temporary measure before going to Venezuela, Bolivia or Nicaragua, all of which have offered him asylum.

But the Interfax news agency quoted Russian migration service head Konstantin Romodanovsky as saying no asylum request had been received as of Saturday. The state news agency RIA Novosti cited migration service spokeswoman, Zalina Kornilova, as also saying no request had been received.

Snowden had made a previous bid for Russian asylum, but President Vladimir Putin said he would have to agree to stop further leaks of information about American intelligence service activities before it would be considered. Snowden withdrew the bid, but participants in Friday's meeting said he was now ready to agree to stop leaks.

Granting asylum to Snowden would add significant new stress to already-troubled Washington-Moscow relations.

Putin and President Barack Obama are expected to hold a summit in Moscow in early September, right before both take part in the Group of 20 summit in St. Petersburg, and the Snowden issue could overshadow both gatherings.

Obama and Putin discussed Snowden, among other issues, during a telephone call on Friday, the White House said in a terse statement that provided no specifics of their conversation about the NSA leaker. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the call was planned several days ago, suggesting that it was unrelated to Snowden's meeting with the activists.

Russia so far has sidestepped the issue by claiming that it cannot take action on Snowden because his presence in the transit zone puts him technically outside Russian territory. But by agreeing to the condition that he stop leaks, Snowden could force Russia's hand.

Friday's meeting in the airport's transit zone included representatives of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. The presence of these internationally respected organizations could add weight to Snowden's asylum bid.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Friday the United States disapproved of Russia facilitating what she called a "propaganda platform" for Snowden, "despite the government's declarations of Russia's neutrality with respect to Mr. Snowden."

On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov aimed to keep up the appearance of neutrality. "We are not having contact with Snowden," he said at a meeting of a regional security organization in Kyrgyzstan, according to Interfax.

China signs $1.1bn deal with Nigeria

China has agreed to give Nigeria a $1.1bn (?700m) low-interest loan to build much-needed infrastructure.

The deal was struck during Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday.

The money would help build roads, airport terminals in four cities, and a light-rail line for Nigeria's capital.

China is investing heavily in Africa at it relies on it for oil and other natural resources.

Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer, but its infrastructure needs updating and most people live in poverty.

Mr Xi said both countries had been brought together by a common task of pursuing national development, AFP news agency reports.

"As a proverb of Nigeria reads: 'A man cannot sit down alone to plan for prosperity,'" he is quoted as saying.

Mr Jonathan is leading a business delegation on a four-day trip to China to boost ties between the two countries.

Chinese companies are already building roads across Nigeria in contracts worth $1.7bn.

China's demand for crude oil produced in Nigeria is expected to rise tenfold to 200,000 barrels a day by 2015, Nigerian officials said, AFP reports.

Refugee? Florida woman facing 30 years jail for sex with 16-year-old boy stripped of Canadian refugee status | National Post A Florida woman must again make her case for refugee status in Canada after fleeing north of the border to avoid a 30-year prison sentence in the United States for having sex with a 16-year-old boy who was on her son?s baseball team Denise Harvey, 47, came to Canada with her husband in 2010, before she could be sent to prison in Florida, and claimed refugee status saying she faced ?cruel and unusual punishment? from the lengthy prison sentence after her convictions on five counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. The Immigration and Refugee Board granted her asylum, ruling her actions would not constitute a crime if she had carried them out in Canada, a decision that was appealed to the Federal Court of Canada. In a decision released Thursday, Justice Anne Mactavish granted the appeal, stripping Ms. Harvey of her refugee status for now, but allowing her a chance to again argue one element of her case. That was greeted as good news in the State Attorney?s Office in Indian River County. ?We?ve been actively pursuing her but of course we were dead-ended by the Canadian government who granted her refugee status,? said Nikki Robinson, assistant state attorney who was a prosecutor of the original case.
