Rebuilding of tornado damaged Center Point Elementary School should be complete by December (slideshow)

CENTER POINT, Alabama -- Construction crews are "surgically repairing" portions of Center Point Elementary School heavily damaged by the Jan. 23, 2012 tornadoes, said Rafael McDaniel, director of new construction for Jefferson County schools.

The $5.7 million repair job should be complete by Dec. 1, although McDaniel said it would be up to system officials when students would return to class there.

"It's been slow getting started," McDaniel said. "We're at the point now where we can move a little faster."

The roofs have been repaired and most of the work now involves plumbing, electrical and air-conditioning work inside the building.

The original building, constructed in 2003, sustained roof damage but an annex built in 2009 received the greatest damage.

Additional storm safety features, including new storm doors, are being installed as part of the work, McDaniel said. "It should provide a lot more protection," McDaniel said.

The building will have a capacity of 700 students. Currently, about 620 students are enrolled.

Since the storms, students have been attending Erwin Middle and Intermediate Schools.
