What's Hot: Good material, very protective, clever stand.

What's Not: Adds some bulk to the phone.

Mapi is a Turkish fine leather case maker who offers form fitting cases and sleeve cases for the iPhone and iPad models. The Orion case for the iPhone 4S is the most versatile case in Mapi's collection with a sturdy pocket to hold the phone and a front display cover that doubles as a built-in stand. The case is made with high quality genuine leather and comes in five colors including black, dark brown, light brown, red and white.

Design

We don't see iPhone 4S leather cases that come with their own built-in stands often, and the Mapi Orion case makes it surprisingly easy. As with other Mapi iPhone 4S/4 cases, the Orion iPhone 4S case is made with quality leather that has some thickness to it and feels very protective. The iPhone 4S has a top loading phone pocket that fits the iPhone perfectly and shuts with a sturdy leather tab with a snap. The Orion has a front display cover that works like the Smart Cover for iPad: it has three grooves that folds back and has built-in magnetic strips to form a stand on the back of the phone. The thick connecting piece on the pack can rotate so that you can prop up your iPhone 4S in either portrait or landscape orientation.

The Mapi Orion iPhone case has nice grain texture; and though it doesn't have a soft lining the smooth leather won't scratch your iPhone when you are putting it into the case or taking it out. The case covers the front bezel completely so if you have apps that require you to extend the touch beyond the touch screen, you will need to peel the edge of the case a bit to do that. The Orion case is very protective of the entire phone, but it does add some bulk to the slim phone. And that's the price you pay for the built-in stand. If you are looking for a case as a gift, the Orion iPhone 4S case fits the role as it comes with a micro-suede like pouch and a black gift box.

Features

The Mapi Orion iPhone 4S case covers most of the phone except the top left side to expose the silence button and volume buttons. The top of the iPhone 4S has only the closure tap covering the middle which leaves the power button, the 3.5mm audio jack and the top mic open. The case has a long cutout on the bottom to give you access to the 30-pin dock connector but doesn't exactly leave out the bottom mic and speaker open. The case does have some space to let the sound in and out, but has some muffling effect under the cover.

The built-in stand on the Orion iPhone 4S case has a clever design. The back piece that connects the front cover to the phone pocket has a magnetic piece, and so does the top panel of the three strips on the front cover. By folding the front cover in different ways, you can create different viewing angles for your iPhone 4S; and as the front cover can rotate 360 degrees, you can position the iPhone 4S in either portrait or landscape views. When you are done with the stand, unfold the stand and use it as front display cover. The stand is easy to use and is reasonably steady while holding up the iPhone 4S.

Conclusion

The Mapi Orion iPhone 4S is for those who are looking for a good quality leather case that's both protective and stylish. The case protects both back and front of the iPhone 4/4S and the built-in stand works very well to create most viewing angle you'll ever need when using the iPhone 4S. We like the color selection and the gift package it comes in. It's not a slim cover however, and adds 2.4 ounces to the weight of the iPhone 4S.
